The Stockholm-Helsinki Overnight Cruise

One of the first international journeys, and one repeated, was the overnight cruise across the Baltic Sea from Stockholm, Sweden, to Helsinki, Finland. It’s a journey that combines scenic beauty, onboard fun, and the chance to briefly visit another Nordic capital.

My first experience with this route was in August 2011 with Viking Line on the ship Gabriella. We were with family and found it to be a very enjoyable trip. We took this trip again in May 2023, this time with Tallink Silja Line. This trip offered a similar core experience but with its own distinct atmosphere and amenities.

For visitors to Sweden, this cruise is a popular and accessible option offering a unique perspective and a memorable experience. This guide shares what the journey is like and offers some tips based on these trips, including the different cabin types experienced.

The Journey: Two Comfortable Nights at Sea

The Stockholm-Helsinki cruise is essentially a two-night trip, with a day spent in Helsinki in between. The schedule is designed for convenience, allowing you to maximize your time both onboard and ashore.

The ship typically departs Stockholm in the late afternoon (around 16:30 or 17:00). The first few hours are very scenic as the ship navigates through the stunning Stockholm Archipelago – Being out on deck for this part is highly recommended. You then spend the night cruising across the Baltic Sea.

Arrival in Helsinki is usually in the morning the next day (around 10:00 or 10:30). You disembark the ship and have several hours to explore the city. Typically, visitors have about 6 hours to roam around Helsinki.

In the late afternoon (around 17:00 or 17:15), you board the ship again for the return journey. You spend a second night onboard and arrive back in Stockholm the following morning (around 10:00).

Your Ship is Your Hotel

One of the great aspects of this cruise is that your accommodation is included for both nights. You have a comfortable cabin to return to after your day in Helsinki.

Getting There & Getting Onboard

The large cruise ferries to Helsinki depart from dedicated terminals in Stockholm. Viking Line and Tallink Silja Line (the two main operators on this route) use different terminals.

  • Viking Line: Typically departs from the Stadsgården terminal, located on Södermalm island, relatively close to the city center. (This is where I departed on Gabriella).
  •
  • Tallink Silja Line: Typically departs from the Värtahamnen terminal, located a bit further north-east of the city center. (This is where I departed for my 2023 trip).

Both terminals are accessible by public transport (bus or metro, sometimes involving a short walk). The check-in process is similar to an airport, and you'll receive your boarding pass and cabin key. Boarding usually starts a couple of hours before departure.

Confirm Your Terminal

Always double-check which terminal your specific cruise departs from when you book your tickets, as getting to the correct one is essential!

Life Onboard: Entertainment, Food, and Fun

The experience onboard the ship is a notable highlight of this cruise. These are not just ferries; they are large cruise ships packed with amenities designed for entertainment and relaxation during the overnight journey.

Activities enjoyed during the family trips included:

  • Restaurants: There's a wide range of dining options, from large buffet restaurants (which were found to offer variety and convenience) to à la carte restaurants offering different cuisines. Prices can vary, but the buffet is often a popular choice, sometimes with drinks included.
  •
  • Bars and Lounges: Numerous bars and lounges offer different atmospheres, from lively pubs with live music to more relaxed cocktail bars.
  •
  • Entertainment: The ships have a varied entertainment program, especially in the evenings. This can include live bands, singers, themed shows, discos, and clubs with DJs. Check the ship's daily program for schedules.
  •
  • Tax-Free Shopping: The ships have extensive tax-free shops (often like a small shopping mall!), selling everything from alcohol and confectionery to perfumes, cosmetics, clothing, and souvenirs.
  •
  • Activities for Families and Kids: There are usually dedicated play areas and activities for children, making it a good trip for families.
  •
  • Spa and Sauna: Many ships have spa facilities, including saunas and pools, perfect for relaxing.
  •
  • Enjoying the Views: Simply spending time on the outer decks or by a cabin window, watching the archipelago scenery or the open sea, is a pleasure in itself.

For our first journey in 2011, we rented a 2-bed cabin. For our second journey in 2023 with Tallink Silja Line, we rented a 4-bed cabin. The extra space in the 4-bed cabin was found to be very comfortable for a family and is something to consider depending on the size of your group and budget.

Explore the Ship

Take some time to wander around the different decks and discover all the restaurants, bars, shops, and entertainment venues the ship has to offer.

A Day in Helsinki: ~6 Hours to Explore

The cruise includes a stopover of around 6 hours in Helsinki. While this isn't enough time to see everything, it's perfect for getting a taste of the Finnish capital, especially for a new visitor.

The cruise terminals in Helsinki are usually located close enough to the city center to allow for easy exploration near the harbor area. From where the ship docks (likely the Olympia Terminal for Tallink Silja or Katajanokka Terminal for Viking Line), you can easily walk or take a short tram ride to the Market Square (Kauppatori) and the nearby Senate Square (Senaatintori) with its iconic cathedral. These are central points from which to start exploring.

During my trips, we used this time to roam around the central parts of the city, soak in the atmosphere, see some key landmarks, and perhaps grab a coffee or a quick bite before heading back to the ship. Six hours allows for a good introductory walk and visit to a main site or two.

Focus on the Center

With about 6 hours, concentrate on the key sights and areas within easy reach of the harbor, such as the Market Square and Senate Square, to make the most of your time in Helsinki.

The Views: From Archipelago Islands to Open Sea

The scenery is a significant part of the cruise's appeal. The journey begins and ends with passage through the scenic Stockholm Archipelago. The thousands of islands, rocky outcrops, and charming houses create a beautiful and constantly changing panorama.

Being out on the deck during the late afternoon departure from Stockholm and the morning arrival back is highly recommended for these views. The overnight part of the journey is spent on the open Baltic Sea, offering a different experience of vastness and the sea horizon.

Cruise Lines and Ships

The main operators on the Stockholm-Helsinki route are Viking Line and Tallink Silja Line. Both companies operate large, modern cruise ferries designed for this type of overnight travel.

My first trip was on Viking Line's MS Gabriella. For my second trip in 2023, I traveled with Tallink Silja Line, likely on either MS Silja Serenade or MS Silja Symphony, as these are their ships typically serving the Helsinki route from Stockholm. Each ship has its own layout, design, and specific offerings, contributing to a slightly different experience.

Operators Offer Similar Experiences

While the specific ship and operator will influence the details, both Viking Line and Tallink Silja Line offer the core experience of a comfortable overnight journey with plenty of onboard amenities.

When to Cruise: Year-Round Adventure

The Stockholm-Helsinki cruise operates year-round, offering a unique experience in different seasons.

  • Summer (June-August): Offers the warmest weather, best opportunities to enjoy the outer decks, and the longest daylight hours for archipelago views. It's also the peak season, so book in advance. (My first trip was in August).
  •
  • Spring (April-May) & Autumn (September-October): Can offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and beautiful light, especially during the archipelago passages. (My second trip was in May).
  •
  • Winter (November-March): The archipelago views are starkly beautiful, potentially with ice. The focus shifts more to the cozy indoor onboard activities. It's the least crowded time and can offer lower prices.

Budgeting Your Cruise

The cost of a Stockholm-Helsinki cruise can vary significantly depending on several factors:

  • Cabin Type: Prices range from basic inside cabins on lower decks to sea view cabins, larger commodore cabins, or even suites. Experiences with different cabin types show that larger cabins offer more space, which can be worth it for families, but will increase the price.
  •
  • Travel Date: Weekends and peak summer dates are typically more expensive than weeknights or off-season travel.
  •
  • Booking Time: Booking in advance often secures better prices and cabin availability.
  •
  • Onboard Spending: Factor in costs for meals (buffet and à la carte are extra unless part of a package), drinks, shopping, and any spa treatments or activities with separate fees.

Compared to booking separate transport and two nights' accommodation, the cruise can often be a very cost-effective way to travel between Stockholm and Helsinki while also providing entertainment and a unique travel experience.

Practical Tips for New Travelers

Based on experiences from these trips, here is some advice for those considering this cruise:

  • Book in Advance: Especially if traveling in summer or on a weekend, book your tickets and desired cabin type well ahead of time.
  •
  • Choose Your Cabin Wisely: Consider your budget, the size of your group, and how much time you plan to spend in the cabin. A sea view is lovely for the archipelago passages. Experience showed a 4-bed cabin is a good option for families needing more space compared to a standard 2-bed.
  •
  • Check-in: Arrive at the terminal with enough time for check-in before boarding starts (usually at least an hour before departure).
  •
  • ID/Passport: Bring valid identification (usually a passport, especially for non-EU/Schengen travelers) as you are traveling to another country.
  •
  • Currency: Onboard, both Swedish Krona (SEK) and Euro (EUR) are typically accepted, but card payment is standard. In Helsinki, the currency is Euro (EUR).
  •
  • Comfortable Shoes for Helsinki: You'll likely be doing a lot of walking during your time in Helsinki.
  •
  • Be on Deck for Departure/Arrival: Don't miss the stunning views of the Stockholm and Helsinki archipelagos!
